BSL Interpretations offers endorsement with NRCPD for those who want to become a regulated trainee interpreter (TSLI) or regulated trainee translator (TSLT).

There are a few things you will need to know before applying to become a trainee interpreter or translator, although you can apply to NRCPD at any time if you meet the requirements for registration.

Trainee Sign Language Interpreter

Trainee Sign Language Interpreter (TSLI) registration is available to people who meet the following:

  • You must be undertaking an approved course

  • You will need to have an approved NRCPD Senior Practioner to supervise your practice and you must meet with them every month with a review of your PDP (Professional Development Plan) every 3 months.

  • You will need to have a Practice Supervisor who will conduct a Practice Assessment of your skills before being endorsed with NRCPD to ensure that you have both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to be safe to practice. They will need to conduct this assessment on an annual basis to ensure that you continue to be safe to practice before each renewal with NRCPD. (The Senior Practitioner and Practice Supervisor can be the same person if appropriate)

  • Trainee Interpreters are restricted from working in some domains. See NRCPD for more information.

Trainee Sign Language Translator

Trainee Sign Language Translator (TSLT) status is available to people who meet the following:

  • You must be undertaking an approved sign language translator training course.

  • Trainee Translators are restricted from working in some domains. See NRCPD for more information.

What We Offer

We can endorse your registration with NRCPD if you meet the criterion above and provide you with the support you will need as a newly regulated trainee interpreter or translator.

  • We will conduct an Initial Practice Assessment which will be mapped against NRCPD's Competency Pathways.

  • We offer monthly meetings with your NRCPD Senior Practitioner/Practice Assessor (which is what NRCPD require). Our remote sessions last up to 1.5 hours and will focus on your areas for development, building theoretical knowledge, autonomy and decision-making, practice reflection and development planning.

  • We will provide you with a copy of your Practice Supervision notes which can be uploaded to your NRCPD portal as evidence of practice supervision.

  • We are always on hand to answer any questions or help with dilemmas relating to your practice between meetings.

  • We will provide you with resources that will help you improve in your areas for development in the form of handouts, webinars, activities and individually tailored feedback on any clips that are submitted for assessment.

  • You will also gain access to the member's area of this website called 'The Student Zone' which includes a library of webinars, example evidence collection recordings, downloadable resources, and useful articles.
