Starting Strong: Building Your Career as a Trainee Interpreter/Translator

Starting out as a trainee interpreter or translator can feel daunting, but a clear understanding of the profession—and practical advice from those with experience—can make all the difference. This 2.5-hour workshop is designed for those at the beginning of their journey, whether you’re pre-registered or newly registered.

In this session, we’ll look at the different paths your career might take, including the pros and cons of working freelance versus in-house. You’ll learn how to spot reputable agencies, what to ask before accepting work, and how to build positive relationships with agencies and clients.

We’ll cover key milestones on your route to registration, with practical information on what to expect from the NRCPD endorsement process. You’ll also get straightforward advice on managing invoices, understanding payment terms, and keeping on top of your finances as a freelancer.

This session will give you the opportunity to hear directly from an experienced interpreter who’ll share lessons learned and practical tips to help you navigate challenges and build your confidence in the early stages of your career.
