Introduction to International Signing (Part 1)
If you already have advanced skills in any sign language and want to broaden your communication toolkit, this one-day online workshop is for you. Designed for sign language interpreters, translators, and anyone who regularly uses sign language, this practical session will help you develop your International Sign (IS) skills for basic conversation and informal international settings.
Why Learn International Sign?
International Sign is increasingly valuable for interpreters and Deaf professionals in the UK and beyond. As more people from different countries and signing backgrounds visit or move to the UK, having some knowledge of IS helps you connect and communicate in both professional and social situations. It’s also a great skill for travel, international conferences, or working at events with diverse Deaf communities. If you’re looking to expand your career opportunities or simply want to feel more confident using sign language with people from around the world, this course will give you a strong foundation.
What You’ll Learn:
Getting Started with International Sign: Understand how International Sign works and learn practical strategies for communicating across language and cultural barriers.
Expanding Visual Communication: Discover ways to adapt your signing—moving beyond one language or set of signs—using visual strategies, gestures, and internationally understood signs.
Improving Communication Skills: Strengthen your ability to interpret and produce clear messages, both in your own sign language and in International Sign.
Building Confidence: Leave the session ready to start and join conversations in International Sign, wherever you find yourself working or travelling.
This is an interactive workshop, running from 10am to 4pm, delivered in BSL. You’ll take away practical tips and strategies that you can use right away.
