Think Aloud Protocol (TAP) for SLIs & Translators: Train the Trainer

This CPD series is offered in joint collaboration with Sign Senei... so if you are a SLI/T educator, mentor, trainer (or interested in becoming one): this workshop is for you!!


Whereas there are differences between the translation and (simultaneous) interpreting process, there are many similarities. This has led scholars to describe interpreting as a form of translation, acknowledging that both practices follow a certain process. Understanding these processes is what makes us better translators and interpreters. Additionally, understanding our own translating and interpreting process allows us to function better in, and as, a team.


These workshops will focus on how we can apply TAP for signed language interpreters and translators. The main aim is to offer you the knowledge and tools to use it in CPD or education.


Over two sessions (two hours each) Isabelle will introduce you to TAP in conjunction with the strategic model of translating and interpreting. The strategic model allows practitioners to analyse their own process in terms of strategies, triggers, and motivations.

It invites reflective practice, increases metalinguistic awareness, and offers tools to discuss our decision-making processes. TAP stems from cognitive psychology and has been used in translation and signed language interpreting research as a method to collect introspective data.

TAP requires participants to verbalise their thoughts while executing a certain task. When applied to translation or interpreting it addresses questions such as “which translational choices do I have”, “which decisions did I make”.


Isabelle will demonstrate how integrating TAP in training practices enables (self)analysis of the translation or interpreting process and its outcomes in a safe environment. We will design Think Aloud Protocols and identify materials you can use in your own teaching, training, and/or mentoring.

Dr Isabelle Heyerick, RSLI (Trinity College Dublin)

Isabelle Heyerick is Assistant Professor in Applied Sign Linguistics at the Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity College Dublin. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from KU Leuven (Belgium) where she is member of the research group on Multimodality, Interaction & Discourse. She is an Honorary Research Fellow with the Institute of Advanced Study at the University of Warwick (UK) where she was a postdoctoral Marie Curie WIRL-COFUND Fellow (2018 - 2020).

Her areas of expertise are Interpreting Studies and Linguistics, with a specific focus on signed language interpreting and sign linguistics. She is mainly interested in the cognitive aspects of simultaneous interpreting and how these translate into linguistic decisions interpreters make in their practice. Her doctoral work was the first to explore Dutch - Flemish Sign Language interpreting. It describes the strategic behaviour of interpreters as reflected in their linguistic actions. The study examines which linguistic interpreting strategies interpreters (can) use and why they do so.

Isabelle is also a qualified spoken and signed language interpreter with a MA in Interpreting (English - Dutch - Flemish Sign Language) from KU Leuven and a graduate degree in Dutch >< Flemish Sign Language interpreting. Additionally, she obtained a MA in Literature and Linguistics from Ghent University (Belgium).
